DIN 2304 standard - an adhesive standard for users and applications

Adhesive technology is undoubtedly an important connection technology in modern industry. Unfortunately, bonded joints often fail to meet requirements, resulting in malfunctions during use. IFAM believes that approximately 90% of quality issues are not related to adhesives, but rather to the application of adhesives. This is precisely the problem that the new adhesive standard DIN 2304 "Adhesive Technology - Quality Requirements for Adhesive Processes" attempts to solve, and therefore the application process of adhesives must be improved.

The new adhesive standard DIN 2304-1 "Adhesive bonding technology - Quality requirements for adhesive bonding processes" is another innovation based on the DIN 6701 series of standards. This standard is an application standard for user services. Its specific purpose is to organize the adhesive application process in a way that allows adhesive users to "manage" the entire process, making it effective and reproducible from conception to development and production of adhesive products. The DIN 6701 standard is mainly used in the rail transit industry, while the DIN 2304 standard is applied in the field of bonding used outside the rail transit industry. DIN 2304 is based on the most advanced bonding technology and organizes and correctly implements bonding processes within the company. It does not focus on specific departments or products, but on the production of all types of bonding joints.

Therefore, we recommend that all adhesive users become familiar with this new standard and its requirements, and if possible, incorporate it into their existing quality management system (QMS), or at least use it as a quality assurance measure for manufacturing plants.

The core elements of DIN 2304 are four:

1. Classify adhesive joints according to safety levels

2. Adopt a bonding supervisor (SIC) to be responsible for the bonding process;

3. Verification and documentation management of adhesive joints

Certified according to DIN 2304.
