Introduction to bonding DIN6701 certification
Welding technology has long been widely used as a connection method for safety components. However, with the rise of bonding technology, its application in various fields is also increasing. It is particularly necessary to provide manufacturing companies with a professional factory environment so that they can become familiar with the full-process bonding technology from design to production to ensure excellent product quality.
Complementing the EN 15085 welding standard is the DIN 6701 certification, which sets clear requirements for bonding work by manufacturers of rail vehicles and their components. This certification was launched by the German Federal Railways in May 2006 to provide solid standard support for the bonding process in the railway manufacturing industry.

DIN6701 certification requirements
Manufacturers of rail vehicles or their components and companies that design adhesive joints or trade in adhesive components can apply for DIN6701 certification. The certification body conducts a company audit to confirm whether the applicant meets the requirements of DIN6701 certification. After a successful audit, the certification body will confirm to the user company in the form of a certificate according to DIN6701 that the requirements of this standard have been met. The certificate is valid for 3 years and requires annual supervision and audit.
DIN6701 certification process
Step 1: Classify Bonded Joints
Classification is the first step in implementing DIN6701 certification. It ensures that you assess how life-threatening the joint is. To do this, you assign the connector to one of four categories.
A1: Connectors with high safety requirements. Adhesion failure would result in a threat to life or physical condition or compromise the reliability of the service.
A2: Joints with general safety requirements. Adhesive failure may result in an accident resulting in personal injury. Or it may result in compromised maintainability of the entire system.
A3: Joints with lower safety requirements. At best, bonding failure will result in a loss of comfort. Accidents involving personal injury are less likely to occur.
Z: Connector with no safety requirements. Adhesive failure does not pose any threat to life or physical condition. It does not compromise the reliability of the service.
Step 2: Determine the scope of DIN6701 certification
During the audit process, the applicant needs to apply for the scope first. If you only need to certify one project of the company. The company's other projects are not required to comply with adhesive standards, confirming:
Approximate volume of adhesive bonds (classification and quantity of bonds).
Number of bonding work areas requiring review
Who is responsible for design and process engineering
Step 3: Designate binding personnel
The process for appointing binders is different for each company. All persons you appoint must be appropriately qualified for the position. The level of qualification depends on the category and scope of bonding processes within the company. They must be able to demonstrate their ability to play this role in the process.
Step 4: Implement the system within the company
Determine how everything works (e.g. joint classification, process description).
Did staff document the process (e.g. bonding protocols, quality sheets)
Is the process effective and are there any parts that could be improved?
Step 5: Accept DIN6701 certification audit
Now that you have the process in place, it’s time for an audit. This audit will examine eight key areas.
Organization of the company (integration of combined personnel into existing structures)
Employee qualifications
Contract review
Supplier management
Design/adhesive selection
Production and documentation
Logistics and warehousing
Quality Assurance and Testing
